Olympian University Cosmetology Students in Las Cruces Place 1st in Regional Competition
Olympian University Cosmetology School took first and second place in a regional competition in Texas.
MESA, AZ, November 28, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A three-person team of cosmetology students at Olympian University, 1460 Missouri Ave. in Las Cruces were literally heads above the rest of their competition by placing 1st place with their giraffe-themed entry from the Lion King at the recent Hair Forum in Fort Worth, Texas.
In addition to using long tresses of hair to create the giraffe look, model Kayla Nicoley walked on stilts to mimic the giraffe's stature. The three-person team of cosmetology students consisted of Norma Romero, Rebecca Chavez and Shayla Scisson. Romero was also on the 1st place team in last year's competition when she was a new student at the prize-winning cosmetology school.
The team had 55 minutes in the arena to construct the hair and make up for their entry. Oodles of hair, pain-staking precision, a colorful backdrop, as well as the ability to work together as a team, were the ingredients that helped the team create a show-stopping entry.
"I really have to give these students credit for their imagination and dedication," said Dora Borunda, director of Olympian University in Las Cruces. "The competition was tough, but the team worked together and brought home the top prize to our school again. I am extremely proud of every one of them."
In addition to winning the top honors last year, the Las Cruces cosmetology school also captured second place and sixth place in the three-person team event in 2010.
The second place team consisted of Lupita Medina, Jolene Vegarra, Belen Segarra and model Sara Apodaca for their paper Mache and hair centaur (half woman, half horse.)
The sixth place winner was an intricate fabric creation interlaced with woven hair fashioned into an Aztec calendar. This Las Cruces team consisted of Ruth Armendariz, Diana Barrazas, Myra Nevarez and model Socorro Ramirez.
All three teams competed against future cosmetologists from nine beauty schools in Texas, including ITS Academy and Aladdin Beauty College; six schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma, including the Olympian University campuses and Aladdin Beauty College, as well as two Arizona schools, the International Academy of Hair Design and International Academy of Hair Design, College of Hair & Aesthetics, as well as Hair Benders Academy in Florida.
The competition encouraged students to pull out the stops on their themed entry to create a hair and makeup idea that would wow the judges, spectators and fellow students. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
